Aloe vera and Vitamins

A new UC Davis study suggests Aloe vera to be a powerful complement to other supplements, enhancing their absorbance and effects. The study suggests that Aloe vera promotes a significant increase in the antioxidant potential of vitamin C and B12, with ORAC ratings particularly high after 4 hours and remaining high even after 24 hours.

Dr. Sridevi Devaraj, Associate Professor at UC Davis, Laboratory for Atherosclerosis and Metabolic Research commented, "It's clear that consuming Aloe vera along with vitamin supplements would be beneficial expecially among the population for whom B12 deficiency is an issue, such as the elderly."

Love this blog!!!

Isn't Aloe vera part of the mucin complex included in BioTears? If not, it probably should be given that mucins are secreted on mucosal surfaces and saliva.

What is an ORAC rating?

ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity, which is the antioxidant capacity measurement of different foods.

In 2004, the Department of Agriculture published a list of ORAC values for about 100 foods commonly consumed the the US population.

The foods with the highest ORAC values are tart cherries, prunes, raisins, blueberries, kale, spinach, chcoa and lots of other spices.

You are absolutely right. Aloe vera is included in the BioTears mucin complex.

In your opinion, how much Aloe Vera should be consumed with my daily vitamin intake and should it be included everyday?

Is BioTears the only product that has Aloe Vera?

Hi Gerald,

BioTears is the only product in our line that includes Aloe vera.

Sandi,

It all depends on the form of Aloe vera you are interested in. Most companies that sell Aloe vera in capsule form recommend taking a capsule before every mean if you have digestive problems.

The sellers of Aloe vera in concentrated juice form recommend a tablespoon in a glass of water before each meal to address digestive problems.

My personal opinion is that it's probably not necessary on a daily basis for a healthy person without digestive or other health problems.

However, that said, most women in this country are on some kind of crazy diet most of the time. This means they are usually deficient in a number of micronutrients, so if you are dieting a small amount of Aloe vera to enhance vitamin and mineral absorption before each meal certainly makes sense to me.

And given the results of the new UC Davis study, it makes sense for elderly people to take a bit of Aloe vera before each meaal. As we age, most of us lose some of our ability to produce the glycoprotein intrinsic factor required to absorb Vitamin B12.
